Description of Work and Responsibilities
Short term contract to develop an intranet based E-Learning suite for
Orange Telecommunications Plc. The suite was developed using
ASP,HTML and JavaScript to be used on multiple ASP webserver
platforms, IIS and Apache, and to be database independent.

FROM March 2001 |
TO November 2001 |
Employer / Position |
Grass Roots Group - Web Development
Manager |
|
Description of Work and Responsibilities Before being made redundant, I was
the Web Development Manager and managed all staff at GRG
Interactive. I was responsible for the design, development,
implementation and support of E-Business solutions, intranet portals
and E-Learning Environments. This involved development using ASP and
SQL Server and the set-up and administration of NT servers and SQL
databases. Major projects have included www.peaceforapound.com,
www.GRGlearning.com, and a SCORM compliant learning management
system. This system was a learner-focused environment, which could
be personalised dynamically by the user, and aimed to deliver any
learning material, which is packaged using the SCORM XML reference
model. The learning management system has been implemented within
GRG and is called the Grass Roots University. I also carried out
research into the development of sites for
WebTV.

Previous Work Experience
|
FROM February 98 |
TO March 2001 |
Employer / Position |
Stoke-on-Trent City Council - Team
Leader |
|
Description of Work and Responsibilities I was head of a development and
support team, which dealt with organisation wide issues. The
majority of my responsibilities were Internet / Intranet related. At
Stoke I created the City Council’s Intranet site using HTML,
JavaScript and ASP. I also managed the City’s Internet site, and was
the lead officer in implementing the City Council’s email service.
My team was responsible for all aspects of Windows NT
administration, development and support and we implemented a Citrix
Metaframe server farm for a new, Oracle based, Integrated Housing
Management System. I managed the City Council’s Internet connection,
through a 2 megabit leased line, and as part of those duties I
managed and maintained the Council’s firewall. One of the bigger
projects that I lead was the Local Link, which was part of the City
Council’s e-government strategy to provide 100% of it’s services
electronically within 5 years. The pilot scheme won the Labour Party
Best Practice In Local Government Award. After the pilot, the system
was re-engineered, and was available to the citizens of
Stoke-on-Trent from many sources, including dedicated Local Link
offices, kiosks and Web based interfaces. The main interface into
the system has been written using ASP, HTML, and Javascript. This
project was short-listed for a Beacon Status Award, and became a
benchmark for other Local Authorities to
follow.

|
FROM November 93 |
TO January 98 |
Employer / Position |
The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals IT Support
Manager |
|
Description of Work and Responsibilities I was responsible for managing a
small team, which supported the Trust’s 500 PC users, and deputised
for the Network Services Manager. I also developed a PC Purchasing
Strategy for the Trust and set up a small computer systems
development policy. I implemented and supported small PC based
systems for several departments including a PC equipment database. I
worked on several projects including setting up access, for the
Trust, to the NHS Network and, through a secure firewall, access to
the Internet. Also, I was involved in setting up links between the
Trust and local G.P.’s in order to electronically transmit patient
laboratory results and clinical letters.
|
|
FROM August 92 |
TO November 93 |
Employer / Position |
Staffordshire County Council, Analyst
Programmer. |
|
Description of Work and Responsibilities I worked as part of a team and
independently. I designed and implemented software for the
Information Systems Services charging system using MANTIS, a fourth
generation language, on an Amdahl mainframe. I also helped in the
design of a staff time recording system, which linked to the
charging system. My other main project was the Staffordshire Police
Postal Fixed Penalties computer system, which involved connecting
the existing Fixed Penalty System, written in the U.F.O. language,
to a new MANTIS system.

Additional Information
I want to further my career in computing in a progressive
organisation, providing a challenging and professional environment. I have had
an interest in Internet Technologies since I finished my degree at Staffordshire
University, and like keeping up to date with client and server side tools. My
experience in web development has increased considerably over the last few
years, as can be seen from my computing experience.
I feel the interpersonal and communication skills I have,
will help me in any career, as I will be working with many different types of
people. One of my qualities is my flexible approach to work. My enthusiasm and
determination has helped me in situations when working under pressure and to
deadlines. During my previous and present employment I have gained valuable
experience in many computer systems.
As part of my position at GRG Interactive, I was responsible
for all staff members, which included the mentoring of university placement
students. I was also responsible for the recruitment of new staff members to the
division. I was responsible for motivating myself and the other team members and
making sure all deadlines were maintained.
I started work at the City Council as a Principal IT Officer
and assistant team leader in the Desktop Development team. At the start of 2000,
I was promoted to the position of team leader. The Local Link project gave me
the opportunity to gain experience of managing a major, corporate wide project.
One of my hobbies is Cult Films and Television. I was an
active member of the Cult T.V. club at Staffordshire University. I have an
interest in the cartoonist Giles, and have developed a web site, using PHP,
Chili Asp and MySQL, on his life and times. This web site was featured in a
recent edition of Collect It Magazine. The site now has over 230 registered
members, and has been visited over 20,000 times.
I was an active member of the scouting movement for some
years and gained my Chief Scouts Award. I was Assistant Leader at a cub pack in
Wroughton between 1986 and 1988. I enjoy reading and listening to music, and
play Badminton regularly. I have gained a proficiency certificate in windsurfing
and I go karting on a regular basis.
The course at Staffordshire University included a wide
variety of subjects. I chose the course due to an interest in computers, and the
integration of computers into the work environment. I became proficient in
undertaking projects, which often involved a preliminary study, gathering
information, producing detailed documentation and professional reports, and
giving presentations. I often had to research into a given area and summarise
the information in a logical way, in a format suitable for the different levels
of knowledge that people have. I have also developed an ability to analyse the
problems of a business, and use my knowledge to suggest a range of improvements
or solutions.
I have loyalty and commitment to any project I am involved
with. I have gained confidence since leaving university and feel I have a solid
foundation for a continuing professional career.
